The Science Fair

Marco had worked on his volcano for two weeks. He shaped it from clay, painted it brown, and practiced the eruption in his kitchen. The school science fair was on Friday.

On Friday morning, Marco set up his table in the gym. Then he opened his bag and froze. He had packed the vinegar, but the box of baking soda was still on the kitchen counter at home.

Marco's friend Priya had an idea. “The cafeteria keeps baking soda for cooking,” she said. They asked Ms. Ortiz, the cook, who gave them a cup. When the judges came by, Marco poured in the vinegar. Red foam bubbled down the sides of the volcano, and the judges clapped.
